Biomass burning in nearby areas doesn't always harm NCR air: Javdekar

Union environment minister Prakash Javadekar on Monday told Rajya Sabha that "there is no conclusive study available to show that biomass burning in neighbouring states will always impact the quality of air in Delhi".

He was responding to a question on the impact of biomass burning on air quality in cities, especially Delhi-NCR. The minister agreed that biomass, stubble or agriculture-related burning exercises impact air quality in the vicinity.

Pay user charges for garbage collection

Citizens will now have to pay user charges to the Nashik Municipal corporation (NMC) for garbage disposal in lines of the system followed in Surat. This was decided by the civic general body on Monday, which also approved giving contract to garbage collection agencies for 10 years.

Centre makes waste segregation compulsory

Waste segregation will now be compulsory when leaving doorsteps. The Union ministry of environment and forest (MOEF) has decided to make it compulsory for waste generators to segregate waste produced by them.In its draft solid waste management rules, the MOEF has state that state governments will form their own waste management policies for state-level implementation.

The ministry has also banned littering and open burning of solid waste in dumpyards under its jurisdiction.The ban is to be implemented within six months.

India approves 27 solar parks at combined 18.5GW capacity

India’s government has now approved 27 solar parks, bringing the aggregate capacity to 18,418MW across 21 states and union territories.

In a written letter replying to a question in the upper house of the Parliament of India, known as Rajya Sabha, energy minister Piyush Goyal said the total cost for the scheme remains at INR40.5 billion (US$606 million).
