India's poor risk 'slow death' recycling 'e-waste'

Young rag-pickers sifting through rubbish are a common image of India's chronic poverty, but destitute children face new hazards picking apart old computers as part of the growing "e-waste" industry.
Asif, aged seven, spends his days dismantling electronic equipment in a tiny, dimly-lit unit in east Delhi along with six other boys.
"My work is to pick out these small black boxes," he said, fingers deftly prising out integrated circuits from the pile of computer remains stacked high beside him.

IPCC report into global warming 'played down positive impact of climate change'

A key global assessment of climate change played down the positive effects of global warming, according to a new review.

The Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change's (IPCC) key 2007 report also contained a number of minor errors and was criticised over a lack of transparency, a Dutch review into the report concluded.

The review highlighted an inaccuracy in the summary in terms of the number of people in Africa likely to be hit by a lack of water - a mistake the report's authors dispute.

Carbon Taxes May be Ineffective in Discouraging Emissions

Of the many ways considered by Western governments to fight climate change, perhaps the most troublesome is raising a tariff wall in the name of clean environment.

One month after France and Italy called for implementation of a carbon tax at European borders, two U.S. senators unveiled the American Power Act, which would arm the United States with the same adjustment mechanism. In the event no global agreement on climate change is reached by 2019, the U.S. bill would phase in a border tax on imports from countries that have not taken action to limit emissions.
