New Delhi, Sep 29 (IANS) Urbanisation, irresponsible tourism, overuse of water, badly planned power and infrastructure projects and deforestation are all affecting the Himalayas, acknowledged a report released by the government here Tuesday.
Prepared by the Almora-based G.B. Pant Institute of Himalayan Environment and Development for the Ministry of Environment and Forests, the report lists guidelines and “best practices” in each of these areas.

India ranked ninth in world tree planting

New York: India has been ranked ninth in the tree planting roll of honour in a campaign to plant a billion trees, which was launched by the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) in November 2006.

The country has registered 96 million trees.

Under this plan, civil society and governments are asked to register the number of trees that have been planted in their respective countries. So far, 167 countries have participated in this programme.

India plans to launch a domestic energy efficiency trading scheme as part of its efforts to reduce emissions of greenhouse gases and combat climate change.Jairam Ramesh, the environment minister, said the ruling Congress party would make amendments to the Energy Conservation Act in the coming months to create a financial mechanism that would help put India on a par with some of the world's most energy efficient economies.
