China now world's largest energy user

China's rise to the top ranking was faster than had been expected in part because the United States has outpaced China in improving energy efficiency measures over the past decade.

The IEA warned that the energy use figures for China last year were still preliminary, but that the trend was clear, the newspaper reported.

In 2000, the United States -- the world's largest economy -- consumed twice as much energy as China, but China, which is now the world's third-largest economy, now consumes more than the United States, the report quoted Fatih Birol, the IEA's chief economist,... Read more..

Meat may be less of a climate-change burden than some experts have claimed

This week the Lantern is taking a break from answering your green lifestyle questions to report on three studies that raise brand-new environmental dilemmas.

Mitloehner takes exception to the widely cited claim that livestock are responsible for 18 percent of the world's anthropogenic greenhouse gas... Read more..

Electric vehicle: Begin with public transport

The inadequate availability of electricity is often cited as a barrier to the use of such vehicles. However, power shortages are mostly during peak load periods. With appropriate policies, that allow a lower price for off-peak charging, it is possible to persuade car users to charge their batteries during off peak times. “Smart grids” can enable such off peak charging. This benefits power plants as well as it helps flatten their load profile and make better use of the installed capacity.

A meaningful push towards electric vehicles can happen only with active intervention from... Read more..

What's My Carbon Footprint?

I'm a reasonably green guy - I recycle, buy mostly organic, a "residential vegetarian" (no meat in my fridge), walk or bike to work more days than not, keep lights and power strips off when not in use, compost...is it enough? Am I doing my part?

Just about everything we do as "civilized" human beings - from driving to running computers to heating our homes to growing our food - releases carbon dioxide, which, what with several billion of us doing it all 24 hours a day, collectively contributes to increasing atmospheric carbon levels, which the overwhelming preponderance of...
