Shift to Lower-Carbon Energy Is Too Slow, Report Warns

Even as the world shifts toward lower-carbon forms of energy, the changes are happening too slowly to keep global temperatures from rising to dangerous levels in the coming decades, an international research group warns in a report to be released on Tuesday.

And low oil prices could make the problem worse by slowing the planet’s transition to cleaner and more efficient cars, trucks and aircraft, according to the report, by the International Energy Agency. Pollution in Delhi: Companies like Google and Coca-Cola equip workplaces with purifiers

India’s booming cities to drive world energy demand, IEA says

India will account for a quarter of global energy demand growth by 2040 as booming manufacturing and a bigger, richer and more-urbanized population set the nation on the path of sustained and rapid expansion, the International Energy Agency (IEA) said.

The country’s oil demand is expected to reach 10 million barrels a day in the next quarter of a century, marking the fastest growth in the world, the Paris-based agency said in a report released on Tuesday. Coal India to invest Rs 6,000 crore to set up solar power units

State-run Coal India (CIL) will invest Rs 6,000 crore to set up 1,000 MW of solar power generation capacity over the next five to six years, according to a senior company executive. "We will fund 70% of the project cost through debt, which will come mostly from banks, while the rest will be through internal resources," said the executive, who did not wish to be named adding that land for the plants will be provided by the states. As a first step, Coal India has prepared a detailed project  report for setting up 200 MW of solar generation capacity.

Solar-powered Water Supply to Panchayats

With 285 gram panchayat (GP) headquarters of the State out of reach of pipe water supply scheme, the Government has directed the Rural Development Department to ensure that these panchayats are provided safe drinking water under the solar energy-based dual pump scheme.

As many as 68 panchayat headquarters of Kalahandi district, 26 GPs in Kendrapara, 25 in Angul, 19 in Nuapada, 17 each in Jajpur and Keonjhar and 15 in Sundargarh districts are still not covered under the pipe water supply scheme.

Falling rates hit solar power players

Solar power made history in the country last week by receiving a bid of Rs 4.6 a unit. Policy makers cheered the drop - from Rs 17.91 a unit in 2010 to below Rs 5 a unit now.

However, there is nervousness among investors in the segment and the supply chain. Experts say leading project developers are putting aggressive bids for 50-200 Mw projects, to be relevant in the market. The likes of ReNew Power, Hero Future Energies, Azure Power and ACME are bidding close to Rs 5 a unit bid for small projects but not winning.

UN raises ceiling for greenhouse gas pollution

The U.N.’s environmental authority has quietly raised its assessment of the level at which global greenhouse gas emissions must peak to avoid dangerous climate change, as governments seek a new accord to fight global warming.

In its first four annual emissions reports in 2010-2013, the UN Environment Program said emissions must not exceed 44 billion tons in 2020 for the world to limit global warming to 2 degrees C (3.6 degrees F). Vestas to supply wind project in India

Vestas has announced that it has received a firm and unconditional order for 20 V110-2.0 MW turbines for a wind power plant in Gujarat State, India.

The order for the Khambaliya project is an extension of an existing contract with Powerica Ltd., a rising power solutions provider in India. Among the 40 MW for this project, 12 MW constitutes an upgrade from a part of a previous order for turbines with the V100 platform, and the remaining 28 MW is newly added.

World Bank warns climate change could add 100 million poor by 2030

Without the right policies to keep the poor safe from extreme weather and rising seas, climate change could drive over 100 million more people into poverty by 2030, the World Bank said on Sunday.

In a report, the bank said ending poverty - one of 17 new U.N. goals adopted in September - would be impossible if global warming and its effects on the poor were not accounted for in development efforts.

175 GW green energy target a big challenge: Suresh Prabhu

Deploying 175 GW of power generation capacity from renewable sources by 2022 is a big challenge, Union minister Suresh Prabhu said on Saturday, adding that solar energy is the “ultimate solution” for India.

“Solar is the ultimate solution for India because solar and wind are real sources of energy. Having 175 GW of power generation capacity from renewable energy is a big challenge,” the railways minister said while addressing the Global Energy Technology Summit 2015, organized here by NTPC.

Centre to set up control room within CPCB to constantly monitor actions to combat air pollution

Union environment ministry on Friday decided to set up a control room within the Central Pollution Control Board (CPCB) to constantly monitor day-to-day actions of state agencies to control air pollution in Delhi and NCR.

Besides, it also took decision to issue notices to states' pollution control boards under Section 18 of the Air (Prevention and Control of Pollution) Act, 1981 to hold the local agencies accountable for not taking desired actions against air pollution within their respective jurisdictions.

Confusion ends, green tax on trucks comes into effect

SMYR Consortium, the toll contractor appointed by the South Corporation, finally agreed to collect the environment compensation charge (ECC) from heavy commercial vehicles from Friday night. The decision comes following a series of meetings between the company and the Environment Pollution Control Authority. The Supreme Court had earlier ordered that a green tax of Rs 700 and Rs 1,300 be imposed on multi-axle trucks entering Delhi.

The first set of special purpose vehicles (SPVs) for 20 smart cities is likely to be ready by December 15, according to Urban Development Minister M Venkaiah Naidu.
