Cycling Carbon Through Terrestrial Ecosystems

Two recent international studies are poised to change the way scientists view the crucial relationship between Earth's climate and the carbon cycle. These reports explore the global photosynthesis and respiration rates—the planet's deep "breaths" of carbon dioxide, in and out—and researchers say that the new findings will be used to update and improve upon traditional models that couple together climate and carbon.

The two reports were published online by the journal Science at the Science Express Web site on Monday, 5 July. Science is published by AAAS, the nonprofit science... Read more..

India's poor scrape a dangerous living in new 'e-waste' jobs

Young rag-pickers sifting through rubbish are a common image of India's chronic poverty, but destitute children face new hazards picking apart old computers as part of the growing "e-waste" industry.

Asif, aged seven, spends his days dismantling electronic equipment in a tiny, dimly-lit unit in east Delhi along with six other boys.

"My work is to pick out these small black boxes," he said, fingers deftly prising out integrated circuits from the pile of computer remains stacked high beside him.

His older brother Salim, 12, is also hard at work instead of being at school... Read more..

Govt plans to devise a new oil pricing formula

The government plans to devise and publicly share a new pricing formula for key auto fuels, looking to inject greater transparency into an arcane system of price-setting amid hopes it will draw greater private participation in the state-dominated fuel retailing sector.

The proposed new formula will also contain an in-built mechanism to freeze pump prices of petrol and diesel if global oil prices rise beyond a certain level to protect consumers, a senior government official told ET.

The finance ministry has in a note proposed creating a software that will dynamically calculate... Read more..

Protests Over Fuel Costs Idle Much of India

Protests against a recent increase in fuel prices shut down markets, schools, airports and businesses across India on Monday, and thousands of people were arrested as violence flared in some cities.

The effect of the demonstrations — led by political parties that oppose the governing coalition led by the Indian National Congress — far exceeded expectations, although no official estimates of crowds were available. Some people affected by the one-day strike said the sizable opposition would force the government to address protesters’ concerns.

Recycling the visions for alternative energy's future

Is it me, or do a lot of the ads for gubernatorial candidates look like modernized commercials for Old Dutch Potato Chips?

There are windmills gently spinning in the middle distance as millionaire Democrats in coveralls stroll through farm fields.

With grim visions of oil-stained beaches, empty restaurants and petro-colored waterfowl on the news every night, you can expect more such ads as "alternative energy" becomes a dominant theme.

Great. I'm all for weaning us off foreign oil and building the economy here, but I had a notion we've heard this before.

So I... Read more..

USING NATURAL GAS AS TRANSITIONAL FUEL TO A RENEWABLE ENERGY FUTURE

or a number of years, notes ecologist and UC Santa Barbara Professor Emeritus Daniel B. Botkin, energy professionals have been plugging natural gas from shale as the cleanest and most abundant source of energy to transition America’s economy from heavy polluting fossil fuels to clean, “green” renewables like solar and wind.

The truth is that extracting shale gas is based on experimental, and extremely risky, technology that uses vast quantities of water and some seriously toxic chemicals to “blast” the gas out of formations.

This often results in gas and fracking chemicals... Read more..

Summit will try to bridge green divide

A few days ago, civil aviation minister Praful Patel hit out at the environment ministry for delays in granting clearance for the proposed Navi Mumbai airport.

In an interview to a news channel, Patel said: “We cannot be so obsessive about environmental issues that we cannot give priority to 50-100 acres of (forest) degradation over a large infrastructure project.”

Spread over 2,000 hectares, the new airport planned near Panvel, about 30 km from Mumbai airport, involves cutting down 400 acres of mangroves - the main bone of contention for environmentalists. Jairam Ramesh,... Read more..

IPCC report into global warming 'played down positive impact of climate change'

A key global assessment of climate change played down the positive effects of global warming, according to a new review.

The Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change's (IPCC) key 2007 report also contained a number of minor errors and was criticised over a lack of transparency, a Dutch review into the report concluded.

The review highlighted an inaccuracy in the summary in terms of the number of people in Africa likely to be hit by a lack of water - a mistake the report's authors dispute.

It suggested the figures should be 90 million to 220 million by 2020, rather... Read more..

Energy body tells India to focus on achieving efficiency - Hindu Business Line

As India will exhibit strong electricity demand growth over the next 40 years to sustain economic development and meet increasing household electricity needs, huge additional capacities will be required.

As a strategy to combat climate change, in the global attempt to reduce carbon dioxide (CO2) emissions in the coming decades, major focus has been on China and India, two of world's most populous countries that continue to register rapid economic growth; and by implication are rapidly growing emitters of CO2.

Devoting attention

Admittedly, there are substantial... Read more..

Carbon Taxes May be Ineffective in Discouraging Emissions

Of the many ways considered by Western governments to fight climate change, perhaps the most troublesome is raising a tariff wall in the name of clean environment.

One month after France and Italy called for implementation of a carbon tax at European borders, two U.S. senators unveiled the American Power Act, which would arm the United States with the same adjustment mechanism. In the event no global agreement on climate change is reached by 2019, the U.S. bill would phase in a border tax on imports from countries that have not taken action to limit emissions.

Enthusiasm of... Read more..
