Swiss Carbon-Neutral Servers Hit the Cloud

Although the company used carbon offsets to reach zero-carbon (offsets were the tool du jour for early carbon-neutrality commitments), the offsetting was only the final stage of a three-stage process to reduce emissions. The first step involved siting their data center with green energy in mind; Switzerland boasts a green electric grid, with 95 percent generated from zero greenhouse gas renewable and nuclear energy sources, as well as high potential for renewables from geothermal, hydroelectric, wind and solar power.

UN urges systemic fix to global economic failings

The U.N.'s top economic officials called for less global dependence on the U.S. dollar in a report Tuesday that urges broad changes to the world's financial policies and markets. A major economic and social survey says the global financial crises have exposed systemic weaknesses, including its reliance on the dollar. One of the drawbacks of making the dollar the global reserve currency, it says, is that the global economy becomes tied to U.S. monetary policy, which is "based only on the state of the United States economy."

Reject All Energy Subsidies, Not Just the Ones for Fossil Fuels

For a country that is still heavily dependent on coal power, news of a more efficient (read: lower-carbon-emitting) coal plant should be greeted with roaring applause from the environmental community. Unfortunately, under the Obama Administration, the U.S. Export-Import bank can’t see past the black and white idea that coal and other fossil fuels are the enemies of the environment, and only renewables can save it. This mentality creates double standards, as when White House denied a $250 million Ex-Imp Bank loan to a coal power plant in India equipped with exceptional carbon-cutting... Read more..
