United Nations warned that corruption is undermining grants to stop logging

A revolutionary scheme backed by the World Bank to pay poor countries billions of dollars a year to stop felling trees is the best way to stop logging and save the planet from climate change, according to wealthy countries and conservationists, yet documents seen by the Observer show the plan is actually leading to corruption and possibly more logging.

Human rights and environment groups yesterday called for a radical rethink of the United Nations scheme, known as Redd (Reduced emissions from deforestation and degradation), after it emerged that many countries were trying to cheat... Read more..

Funds tap into GCC’s carbon market

As news of some clean development mechanism projects initiated by the GCC governments begins to spread, funds managed by banks and financial institutions are descending on the region to tap CERs, or Certified Emission Reduction units, that can be traded on European climate exchanges.

The GCC as a source of CERs is still at a fledgling stage and cannot be compared to Europe or even to China and India.

“You have funds trying to tap into the CERs from the GCC. These funds are managed by professional bodies and they may have banks and financial institutions behind them,” said... Read more..

Climate-change movie suffers without disaster footage

No longer content to simply present persuasive data models using PowerPoint as in "The Inconvenient Truth," films like "The Age of Stupid" and "Climate Refugees" are demonstrating the devastating relationships between contemporary natural catastrophes and the effects of global warming. The challenge these films face is to illustrate the increasingly dire impacts of climate shifts while remaining focused and level-headed enough to convince viewers about the significance of the issue before disaster fatigue sets in.

Unfortunately, a rather alarmist tone pervading "Climate Refugees"... Read more..

Emerging Asia to tread lightly with capital controls

Having learned lessons from the past, emerging Asia is showing caution about adopting heavy-handed capital controls to curb heavy investment inflows and is focusing instead on closing economically disruptive loopholes.

Measures announced by Indonesia and South Korea last month targetted particular areas of their markets, unlike Thailand in 2006 which effectively imposed a blanket tax on foreign investment. A Reuters poll suggests further targetted measures can be expected from the region.

That is inspiring confidence among investors and economists that any measures in coming... Read more..

Report: Damage to oceans almost irreversible

A sobering new report warns that oceans face a “fundamental and irreversible ecological transformation” not seen in millions of years as greenhouse gases and climate change already have affected temperature, acidity, sea and oxygen levels, the food chain and possibly major currents that could alter global weather.

The report, in Science magazine, doesn’t break a lot of new ground, but it brings together dozens of studies that collectively paint a dismal picture of deteriorating ocean health.
“This is further evidence we are well on our way to the next great extinction event,”... Read more..
