The Electronics Sector Skills Council of India (ESSCI) in partnership with the Engineering Staff College of India (ESCI) has set up a Centre of Excellence aimed at creating a large pool of talent in the sunrise sector of solar photovoltaics and electronics.

Tenders to lease sea blocks for wind farms early next year

The Government will float tenders early next year to lease out sea blocks to companies for setting up wind farm projects along the 7,600-km coastline.

“Tenders will be floated in three months time to invite companies for setting up offshore wind farms,” New and Renewable Energy Secretary Upendra Tripathy said on the sidelines of a conference.

On the blocks to be offered in the first round of the bidding, Tripathy said, “The number of offshore blocks will depend on clearance from the Defence Ministry and others.”

Rural Agri Ventures India, a business incubation firm, announced the launch ‘My Way’, a light-emitting diode (LED) product which the company says is affordable and built with energy efficient and environmentally-friendly technology.

Berkeley Researchers Developing Artificial Leaves to Produce Carbon-Neutral Fuel

Researchers at UC Berkeley have created a synthetic leaf that uses water, sunlight and carbon dioxide to make liquid fuels such as methane, butane and acetate — and releases oxygen into the air, The Los Angeles Times reports.

Lead researcher on the project, Peidong Yang, plans to use a “genius” grant of $625,000 he recently received from the MacArthur Foundation to nurture the artificial leaf technology. Although it is still several years from being commercially viable, it could represent an important step on the road to creating a carbon-neutral and sustainable fuel system.

Dubai power, water facility to use electric cars

Dubai Electricity and Water Authority (DEWA) has become the first government organisation to use electric cars after it added eight of such vehicles to its fleet, the media reported on Tuesday.

DEWA aims to implement the Dubai Green Transport initiative and encourage the use of sustainable transportation with hybrid and electric vehicles, which will cut total carbon emissions in the city by 19 percent.

Students Build Prototype of Energy-efficient Car

Three students from Government Engineering college, Barton Hill, Thiruvananthapuram are on cloud nine. Bibin Sagaram, Vishnu Prasad S and Ronith Stanly, whose creation represented India in the Shell Echo competition held in Philipines have not only made the state but nation proud by creating a proto-type of an energy-efficient car.  The prototype is put on display at Government Engineering College Barton Hill, Thiruvananthapuram, here.

Government hopes to free Rs 40,000 crore fund soon for afforestation

The Centre is hopeful that the bill to utilize close to Rs 40,000 crore currently locked in the Compensatory Afforestation Fund Management and Planning Authority (CAMPA) will be passed by wide consensus in the forthcoming winter session of Parliament.

The funds have been lying utilized following a 2009 order of the Supreme Court and the government intends to ensure that they are accessed by states and the Centre for compensatory plantation, environment and forests minister Prakash Javadekar said. Give report on Ganga clean drive: UHRC

A team of the Uttarakhand Human Rights Commission (UHRC), after spending three days at Gangotri near the source of the Ganga, and witnessing rampant pollution of the river there, has issued a notice to the state chief secretary, asking him to submit a report on the steps taken to check disposal of waste by the proliferating shops, restaurants and hotels in the area. Government to fast-track green clearances for Sagarmala project

The government is embarking on the Sagarmala project aiming to trigger industrial development along the coastline and develop smart cities near key ports such as Kandla and Paradip. Delhi Secretariat to run on solar energy

The Delhi Secretariat will be the first in the country to run completely on renewable and solar energy, the Delhi government announced on Monday.

“The Delhi government in association with ministry of new and renewable energy (MNRE) will set up a three MW solar power plant at the Indraprastha Power Station,” an official statement said.

“The plant will directly supply power to Delhi Secretariat for the next 25 years, making Delhi the first state secretariat running completely on renewable and green energy,” the statement said.

Grundfos to make small solar pumps in India

Danish company Grundfos is likely to launch its India designed and manufactured solar pumps next year, said a top official of the company’s Indian subsidiary.

The company is also mulling an assembly plant in Gujarat to save on logistics cost.

“We plan to launch the small solar pumps during the first quarter of 2016-17. It will be targeted at semi-urban and rural markets where power supply is unpredictable,” N.K. Ranganath, managing director, Grundfos Pumps India Pvt. Ltd., told reporters here on Monday.

GE Hitachi, DTE Energy collaborate for ESBWR development

GE Hitachi Nuclear Energy (GEH) and DTE Energy have announced collaboration to explore advancing the detailed design of the Economic Simplified Boiling Water Reactor (ESBWR).

In May, DTE Energy received the first-ever ESBWR-based combined construction and operating license from the U.S. Nuclear Regulatory Commission (NRC).

DTE has not made a commitment to build, but is keeping the option open, given the long-term environmental and economic advantages of nuclear power, the company said in a statement.

Innovative Solar Systems to launch 376 MW solar projects in the U.S

Innovative Solar Systems (ISS), a developer of large scale solar farms in the U.S., has announced 376 MW of utility scale solar farm projects in various southern states.

The shovel ready projects vary in size from 5MW, 20MW, 35MW and 50MW and will afford owners of these projects with long term Purchase Power Agreements (PPA’s) from credit worth utility companies, a statement from the company said.

Intelligent Energy inks GBP-1.2bn fuel cell deal in India

UK fuel cell company Intelligent Energy Holding Plc (LON:IEH) on Thursday announced a deal to provide clean power to telecom towers in India that it said will bring contracted revenues of about GBP 1.2 billion (USD 1.8bn/EUR 1.6bn) over 10 years.

Haryana divides local bodies into clusters for solid waste management

The Urban Local Bodies Department has decided to adopt an integrated approach from collection to disposal of solid waste in ULBs, an official spokesperson said here today.

For this purpose, a single private agency would be given the responsibility of collection, source segregation, transportation, treatment and disposal of solid waste, she said.

She informed that 85,215 applications were received for the construction of individual household latrines (IHL) in the state.

Earth is on track for average warming of 2.7 degrees Celsius by 2100, higher than the UN target, said an analysis today of country pledges for curbing climate-altering greenhouse gas emissions.
