Climate groups dismayed at G20

CLIMATE change campaigners have expressed dismay after the leaders of the world's most important economies failed to earmark funds to pay for a deal to cut carbon emissions.

States are due to hold a global summit - billed as the last chance to halt global warming - in Copenhagen in December in order to agree on ambitious new targets for cutting the production of greenhouse gases. Emerging economies, led by a sceptical India, have insisted that they can not sign up to such a deal unless the rich-world nations whose industry caused the problem pay billions to finance... India signals flexibility on climate deal

India says it could agree to “implicit” carbon emissions targets as part of a global climate change deal, by passing domestic laws enshrining concrete measures that India would take to control greenhouse gases as its economy grows. The comments from Jairam Ramesh, India’s environment minister came as almost 100 heads of state and government gathered for a United Nations meeting on Tuesday to discuss how to tackle climate change.

Carbon deal hopes raised

HOPES of a global deal to reduce carbon emissions have been lifted by recent talks in New York.
However, it is unlikely that any cuts eventually agreed to will be sufficient to reverse damage to the Great Barrier Reef and the Murray-Darling Basin.
Climate Change Minister Penny Wong, who is currently on her way home after a gruelling set of meetings, acknowledged from New York that the ground appeared to have "shifted slightly" in favour of progress.

India: Climate change gaps could widen

NEW DELHI, Sept. 24 (UPI) -- Gaps between developed and developing nations could widen farther in the absence of a global agreement on equity and burden-sharing on carbon emissions, Indian Vice President Hamid Ansari warned.
Without such an agreement, climate change negotiations would likely spill over to other multilateral, regional and bilateral negotiation platforms and would "further accentuate existing divisions," Ansari said, The Hindu reports.

'Green' roofs may help fight global warming

Washington, September 24 (ANI): Scientists in Michigan, US, have reported that "green" roofs, which are popular urban rooftops covered with plants, could help fight global warming. The scientists found that replacing traditional roofing materials in an urban area the size of Detroit, with a population of about one-million, with green roofs would be equivalent to eliminating a year's worth of carbon dioxide (CO2) emitted by 10,000 mid-sized SUVs and trucks.
