MSEDCL comes out with solar roof top policy

State-run power discom MSEDCL has finally come out with its solar roof top policy. This has facilitated the use of solar panels by consumer for meeting their power requirement. Maharashtra Electricity Regulatory Commission (MERC) had notified the regulations in this regard on September 10. MSEDCL has uploaded the detailed policy on its website www.mahadiscom.in

Thane to get 100 new e-buses

After the MMRDA's plan to introduce the first electric buses in the city in the coming year, the Thane corporation has decided to not stay behind.

With about 100 e-buses in the first phase, the Thane Municipal Corporation (TMC) is gearing up to open bids for the tender in January 2016, so that the e-buses are available on the roads soon.

But, this is not all that TMC wants to do. It also has grand plans to set up a solar energy power plant at the Thane Municipal Transport depot. This will ensure that the depot is selfsufficient when it comes to its energy needs.

Paris Climate Deal Expands Opportunities for Energy Storage

In the wake of the U.N. talks in Paris, trillions of dollars of investment in green energy had been pledged by development banks, pension funds, corporations and other investors. 

Hugh Sharman, a principal at the Danish consultancy Incoteco, said much of that money might need to be earmarked for storage.

“For renewable energy to succeed as a replacement for fossil-based electricity generation, storage needs to be a significant fraction of the world’s 5,600-terawatt power industry,” he said. He did not project exactly how much would be spent, however.

Energy sector accounts for 58% of greenhouse gas emissions: Govt

The government on Monday informed Parliament that the energy sector in the country was the biggest emitter of greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions.

The energy sector contributed 58% of the overall emissions in India whereas the share of industry amounted to 22%, followed by 17% from the agriculture sector.

The figures were shared in Rajya Sabha by environment minister Prakash Javadekar in response to a question.

Brazil launches distributed generation programme emphasizing solar energy

Brazil’s Ministry of Mines and Energy (MME) has launched a programme encouraging consumers to generate their own power from renewable energy sources, with a particular emphasis on solar.

The distributed generation (DG) model is also promoted as a way to reduce the consumer’s spending on electricity.

The new programme, named the Distributed Generation Development Program for Energy (ProGD), could generate more than BRL100 billion (US$25.6 billion) in investments by 2030, said MME.

Indian carmakers call for comprehensive plan after Delhi smog crackdown

India's carmakers and dealers on Thursday called for a clear, nationwide policy to combat air pollution, after a crackdown on diesel cars and trucks in New Delhi, which campaigners have vowed to extend to other cities.

A Supreme Court decision on Wednesday to alleviate the smog-choked capital has unsettled India's car industry, which says an uneven, haphazard policy makes it hard to plan investments and allows damaging regulatory arbitrage across states.

Azure Power files for IPO to raise US$100 million

India-based renewable energy firm Azure Power has filed for an IPO in the US in order to raise US$100 million, according to a New York Stock Exchange filing.

The company is targeting 520MW by the end of 2016 and 1GW committed or operating by the end of 2017. Longer term, it is targeting 5GW by the end of 2020.

As of 30 September Azure Power was operating 17 utility-scale projects and several commercial rooftop projects with a combined capacity of 242MW. This represented a compound annual growth rate, or CAGR, of 135% from May 2012.

HC steps in, tells Bengalureans to segregate waste

Noting that the BBMP cannot handle waste management on its own, the Karnataka High Court on Thursday made it mandatory for all Bengalureans to segregate garbage at source.

To start with, it said, plastic bags should not be used to dispose of waste.

Delhi: Notice to 8 construction site for flouting dust pollution

Delhi government today served notices to eight major construction projects, including one of the Airport Authority of India, for flouting dust pollution norms on a day it officially discussed the IIT-Kanpur report for the first time.

The proponents of the projects have been asked to deposit environment compensation penalty of Rs 50,000 each and take rectification measures. Last week, 38 other projects were slapped with similar penalties.

NGT orders inspection of waste-to-energy plants in Delhi

Concerned over delay in the operationalizing the waste-to-energy plants in capital, the National Green Tribunal today constituted a "high-powered team" to inspect these plants while directing it to submit a report within three weeks.

A bench headed by NGT chairperson Justice Swatanter Kumar constituted the team consisting of the Environment and Power secretary, NCT Delhi, the member-secretary of CPCB, DPCC, senior scientist from MoEF, senior officer from Irrigation Department of UP (for Ghazipur plant) and chief engineers of municipal corporations.

Emissions in Delhi could rise up to 19 times by 2020

An eight-year study, from 2008-2015, conducted by the IIT-Roorkee, University of Minnesota in the US and University of Surrey, UK, has shown that emissions from vehicles in Delhi have increased up to three times between 1991 and 2011; these could rise by up to 19 times by 2020.

Researchers said the study has now been accepted for publication by international science journal Atmospheric Environment.

Is the Sajnekhali Tourist Lodge within the core area of the Sundarbans? SoftBank starts solar journey with 350MW deal in India

Nikesh Arora, president and COO of SoftBank, has started the company’s solar journey in India by bagging a 350MW deal.

SB Energy, a three way joint venture between SoftBank, Bharti Enterprises and Foxconn Technology, has bagged the NTPC bid to develop a 350MW solar plant.

The fossil fuel industry is facing a $US33 trillion ($A45.8 trillion) hit to its expected revenues over the next 20 years, following the dramatic and unexpected result of the Paris climate change conference last weekend.
